Congratulations to Team NUS Wushu!!

Congratulations to our fellow Wushu pugilists for achieving an exceptional result in the Inter-Varsity POL-ITE 2011. This annual event, which was held in Ngee Ann Polytechnic on 29 October 2011 (Saturday), was the only moment where many Wushu elites of various institutions (ITE, Polytechnics and Universities) came together to demonstrate their best routines. And, I am proud to announce that we impressed the judges and managed to clinch the overall 3rd position in this Year IVP 2011 Wushu Competition!

Zhang Tian, who is the nominated Sportsman of Year 2011, competed in the传统男子长拳(Traditional Long Fist) event. Despite getting a deduction of 0.2 points for inappropriate attire, this did not affect his performance on stage; instead he managed to impress the judges with a final score of 8.18. He also got a silver medal for the 男子传统短器械 (Traditional short weapon) event.

Another gold medalist, Tan Guan Ting, Ryan, also did exceptionally well in the男子象形拳(Xiang Xing Quan, Eagle Claws) event. With his agile movements and powerful executions, he managed to bring the whole crowd to attention despite being the first competitor for this event. This earned him a final score of 8.36.

As for the rest of them, they had also done well in clinching silver and bronze medals. Although not every one of them went home with a medal, I am sure that we have certainly left a great impression to the other institutions and the public that NUS Wushu is one team that they have to be wary of in future!

Since the start of semester 1 AY 2011/12, our competitors had been undergoing endless of grueling trainings despite their busy academic schedules and upcoming CAs and Exams. Nonetheless, in the 13 events that we participated out of 19, NUS Wushu have clinched a total of 12 medals with 2 Gold, 5 Silver and 5 Bronze. Hence, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our coach,陈志鹏, for his dedication and patience.

Without his guidance, our team would not have attained such great results!

Lastly, (天下无不散的宴席) as all good things must come to an end, it is time for us to summon our “mugging spirit,” open our books and start to prepare for the coming EXAMS!! May we do even better for the future competitions! Yeah;)

Crisp movements are essential to score well in a wushu competition

As what we have been hearing, Wushu comprises "、""、"神。Basically, " is about the way you execute a stance (i.e. sharp, sloppy..), while 气 = vital, suggesting your stamina and 神 (spirited), the way you present yourself (first impression). Aren't both 精 and 神 similar? Erm, not really...for example...a pale-looking wushu practitioner who have been mugging up for several weeks 20 hours per day executes his movement with full of power quickly. In this case, although he has the 精, he has a poor/no 神 in him; this may cause him to lose some marks as compared to one who has both. So, what you can take away from here is that these 3 factors are correlated, hence for those who are competing, please rest well :)
As suggested by our Coach to watch the adidas commercial by Jet li regarding the way he executed his crisp movement...yup, it was easy to find those videos having "adidas AND Jet li"
Here they are:

erm, I was actually anticipating more, but it seemed differently to what I had thought.

Next, and I found this (only relevant video left)

There were a few such demonstrations, but we curious people love to find more..ok..:)
Alrighty, there you go...notice the way he executed each stance. OMG! Crisp and Powerful! This made him to earn his first wushu Changquan Champion!

*Disclaimer: That person in this video was Jet Li when he was young. For those who mistakenly thought that it was Zhang Tian :X please take note, although he looks like him..

Ok, that all I could find:( Please do not be disheartened, as what the adidas video has stated: "Nothing is impossible" Yesh! Besides using Expert Wushu Practitioner as example, I thought that it is a great idea to show you another example of crisp movements from non wushu source...
There you go...Enjoy!

Yup! Did you notice his sharp dance movements! Yes! If he were to dance sloppily, I presume you would have closed the window before finish watching the video.
Hence, crisp movements are essential to score well.
There is also another reason for why I chose this song. The name of this song is "BEAT IT!" As, some of our members are competing in IVP soon. I, on behalf of our NUSWushu President, "Pursuant to section N, paragraph U, section S of the NUSWushu competitors' act, I hereby wish you ALL THE BEST and Beat not just your honorary competitors but your usual best!" Thank you!

Alright that's all folks
GOOD LUCK!
